Great experience even though it was the most expensive champagne cream tea in Oxford!

You feel as though you are stepping back in time afternoon tea was served in the lounge comfortable armchairs and sofas with interesting pictures loved the touch of all the glass jars with the different teas in. Was impressed that we were offered iced water as we ordered it was an incredibly hot day The selection of sandwiches were nice and scones melted in the mouth wasn't sure about the option of lemon curd not something I've come across before and probably would ask to change and it did appear that you had either butter or cream for me the best part was the tiny little cakes the art and workmanship in those was amazing! We were offered refills which was good a throughly pleasant experience, had a quick look in the morse bar loved the molton brown in the loos would go again if in oxford

The food was generally good, but with a little more attention paid to the details that matter, such as flavour, seasoning, and cooking, it would have been raised to something more special. For example, I has a guinea fowl terrine that was presented beautifully yet while the garnishes tasted good the terrine itself lacked an iota of seasoning.

We both had a main of roast lamb which promised much but delivered little. The meat was supposed to be cooked pink but arrived well done. It was meant to have a wild garlic puree, which turned into a pea puree somewhere between the menu and the pass. The meat had a scattering of mushrooms on top that were rubbery and tasteless (rather like re-hydrated dried mushrooms) and did not seem to have a place on the plate. Perhaps the worst error were otherwise delicious rosemary fried potatoes being raw in the middle.

Deserts were good with a flavoursome pannacotta and an exquisitely flavoured apple crumble rounding off the meal.

The waiting staff were all friendly, competent, and attentive.

So overall, this was a good meal out and I don't mean to sound too down on the experience. It is just frustrating when sloppiness stops a good meal becoming excellent.

I had mentioned during the online booking that we were driving to Oxford to take our daughter out for Canadian Thanksgiving, and hinted that pumpkin pie would be lovely if available, although I wasn't really serious. When we arrived a very sweet waitress told us that unfortunately they had not managed to get us pumpkin pie , however throughout the meal we were brought pumpkin treats- small bowls of pumpkin soup and pumpkin ravioli. This was unexpected and extremely appreciated! The staff could not have been warmer or kinder. It was a lovely evening with excellent food and wine. A real treat.
