More about Café Rouge - Edinburgh

In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.

As part of the nationwide chain of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

[...]cafe rouge was very busy and staff coped well 1930 on a friday, main course was served as soon as starter was finished. the manager apologised for the timing and deducted the cost of the main starter from bill, didn't bother us in the slightest, but a welcome gesture. Have dined at cafe rouge before and will again. Very happy

Dined at lunchtime, meals were up to the usual high standard that we expect from this restaurant. Nice to see that the menu had changed. Disappointed that there are no longer daily 'specials' as these had often been very good in the past. Also, no snails on the menu anymore.
Service was excellent.

I have dined here several times & the first few were excellent, food & service. However, the last three times, one of which was the Glasgow restaurant, I have been disappointed. The food was not as good, the service was slow & the waiting staff didn't seem to care much. We usually come here for an occassion such as birthdays or a run upto Christmas get together, in my opinion the standards seem to be dropping for whatever reason. I would not recommend to a friend going on my last three visits but I am booked for December just to give it another try.

Had an early dinner, quiet when we arrived but filling up by the time we left. Pleasent atmosphere as always and the food was good quality and very tasty. Service was good, not too slow as it can be a times all in all a good experience.

Mostly good if only the bar staff could get their act together. I've been on many occasions and this is what lets the place down. Who want to wait 20 minutes for an apperatif which then arrive at the same time as your meal?

went for dinner, service quite slow. 2 meals ok but not a lot on plate. Other one was a steak, 2thirds of which was fat, with a few chips. Not worth the money paid.

Whilst the service was good my partner and I both had steaks one was supposed to be cooked Well Done and one Medium to Well Done. The Well Done one had to go back as it still had blood showing in it. That meant the other steak went back to keep warm otherwise we would have been eating at different times

I have been to Cafe Rouge many times and always enjoyed the food but unfortunately this time it was disappointing. I had the boeuf bourguignon and although the beef was very tender, it seemed as if an ingredient was missing. My daughter and I both had gratin dauphinoise and we both felt it could have been cooked for a bit longer as the potato was too firm. Everything else was very enjoyable. I have to say that as this was the only time I have been disappointed, it will not stop me from coming back.
