Booked table for 6 to celebrate a birthday. Staff very welcoming and service excellent. One of staff explained history of building and told stories of ghosts seen. Meal excellent and would definitely recommend.

More about Café Rouge - York

In the walled city of York, Café Rouge serves French cuisine within a glorious building featuring glass frontage and a vibrant red colour scheme. York Minister is just around the corner from Café Rouge.

As part of the nationwide chain of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Café Rouge – York allows diners to take in the atmosphere of York's side streets with al fresco dining, whist enjoying an affordable French dish.

Our group enjoyed an early evening Chritmas meal before attending the NHS carol service in York Minster. The service was friendly and efficient and the food very good. I'm sure that we will visit them in 2013 for our annual Christmas trip to York.

Had an evening meal at 1900hrs. Restaurant fairly empty when we arrived but soon filled up. Waitress was very pleasant and despite being very busy kept an eye on our table so we were not left waiting.

Visited with 4 kids under the age of 10. All provided with a balloon, crayons, activity book which kept them entertained till their food arrived. Good, friendly, attentive waitress. Good variety of kids food at [$] for main course, dessert and drink. We adults enjoyed our food as well though would prefer portions to be a big bigger.

Booked a booth by on line booking which was very handy but did,t really know what a booth would be and they text you with a contact tel so we were able to alter the original time to later in day. A booth ended up to be a window seat, which would have been lovely except the sun was blazing down and we melted and in the end had to asked to be moved to a table in the shade. The food quality was fair with good portions and my husband had a great steak, but you just got fries, steak and had to order side dish of veg, and the drinks were expensive at [$] for a large glass of wine.We have previously only eaten at Cafe Rouge Restaurants for breakfast as their eggs benedict is lovely. Must add we did use [...] vouchers and on paying our waiter did joke that they are fake money. Wasn't sure how to take that when our bill came to nearly [$]. Over all a fair meal wouldn't want to pay the full bill without vouchers though.

Visited for birthday lunch and we were not disappointed. Food was great. The waiter a little grumpy at first but he got over himself by the time we left.
