Rubbish!

We had our first date here 25 years ago and returned last night to celebrate it's silver anniversary. We weren't expecting too much. It's basically a steak and burger joint and that's fine when you're in the mood and we were. But we had rather hoped that the menu
and quality of food and service would have kept up with the times. On the contrary it was as tired as the decor and having had a bottle of bubbly and started the red with our second choice of main (the first was unavailable by 7:30pm) which was nowhere in sight 30 minutes after we'd finished our salad starters which would have graced any Weathersoon pub we picked-up the remains of the red and walked home.

What we saved on the main course we'll spend today at one of the Bistro chain either in Covent Garden or Soho. You get two good courses for £15 each and it's comfortable and pleasant.

Good feeling from the start. Very welcoming, good attention to the small children in our party of 6.Piano music ideal, we had pleasant background entertainment, but could converse easily. The round table was very good for everyone conversing. Steaks were a particular success, as were the catch of the day,i.e.monkfish. The service charge was a bit steep for a big bill, but that seems to be London these days.

It's busy and a little cramped, but friendly and welcoming. Service was excellent. The fish of the day (sole) was excellent. The vegetarian options are limited. The Californian Pinot gris can be strongly recommended. Although informed on booking that 2 people have a two hour slot, we stayed all evening (on a Saturday) and never felt we were being hurried.

Another great evening at Joe Allen's. The staff are exceptionally efficient and friendly. Maybe time for a few changes on the menu but still enough to choose from, including the old favourites. The place was buzzing but without being overly noisy so we could have a good catch up at a friend's birthday.

Ambience lovely. Relaxed informal. Good lighting. Pianist playing tunes. Food nice. Would like to see some healthier options on the starter and dessert menus. But overall the food I did have was very nice. Service very good.

We have been to Joe Allen's on many occasions. Last night's experience was mixed. Eggs Joe and fish cakes good. Bar steak disastrous - full of gristle. Manager deleted steak from bill and offered a complimentary dessert. Good , but the steak did spoil the meal.
