Winner of 2 stunning AA Rosettes, Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall showcases classic English dishes and mouth-watering 35-day aged steaks. Cutting-edge cocktails offer the latest in mixology trends, while bespoke furniture turns the South Bank restaurant into a contemporary haven.

The speciality at Gillray’s restaurant is undoubtedly steak. A huge selection of cuts is offered both on and off the bone, with an assortment of sauces including red wine and bone marrow. For fish lovers, south coast lemon sole is served with creamy parsley butter. An alluring warm chocolate pudding features on the dessert menu, served with Oxford marmalade ice cream.

Taking great care in the quality and taste of Aberdeen Angus steaks, Gillray's uses locally sourced steaks from the finest English Farms. The cattle enjoy two seasons at grass, succeeded by weeks of heather giving the meat a superior texture and richer flavour. Dedicated to James Gillray, with caricatures and his artwork on display, Gillray's in London boasts stunning views of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

Waterloo Train Station is a 7-minute walk from Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar on the South Bank. Gillray's can be accessed via the main entrance to the London Marriott Hotel on Westminster Bridge Road. Alternatively, enter via the South Bank (Queen's Walk), above the London Aquarium. Valet parking is also available on site.

Excellent service with helpful staff but food very disappointing.

The restaurant had the feel of a somewhat soulless but typically overpriced international hotel chain. Also as It was a particularly warm late afternoon/early evening the lack of air conditioning was noticed by us and the other perspiring guests. However whereas this could be forgiven in the UK as such afternoons are few and far between the below average food is a serious issue.

Even the (small sized) steak portion seemed to have an edgy taste ( bordering on beyond its Use By date).

Expensive and limited wine list

Although Margaret had a very enjoyable meal, her husband, John, as a vegetarian, found himself without much, if any, choice. There were no veg. starters, and the kitchen said they could not do anything about that except provide a plate piled high with lettuce leaves (no variety of lettuces at all) with a babycham dressing. This is not good enough in one of the top hotels and restaurants in London. The kitchen staff should have been able to adapt .. other places we visit do. His main course, beetroot and cheese tart, was very small and plain with no extra veges on the side; this also was a disappointment. Being a vegetarian is not a crime (which is what John was beginning to think about himself) .... these hotels/restaurants need to pull their socks up. The wine, however, was excellent. And the staff were friendly.

Just to let you know, we were not offered the Stardeal of £20 for 3 courses and a cocktail, although I stated that we had booked that deal. We were given the
'Market' menu and were charged £29 for 3 courses and a cocktail. That said, the menu was slightly better than the Stardeal one. The cocktail was delicious
and the 3 courses were all good. The wine is very expensive there- £36.50 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio Rose. I know it is a 5 star hotel but the wine is dearer
than in the Criterion, for example. The waiting staff were all very friendly and efficient and the service nicely spaced out. The views over the river are great,
although when we first arrived it was so sunny the blinds were down!

Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

Excellent food, friendly and efficient service and a nice view of the Thames and London Eye. I was rather surprised at the cost of our coffees, though. It cost £4.74 per cup inclusive of VAT and two cups each for three people came to nearly £28.50 -- it will remind me to limit myself to one cup or preferably none at all!

The food was excellent and the complimentary cocktail and starter that came with the meal was a nice surprise. The staff were very welcoming and made sure out drinks were topped up and we were comfortable. All in all it was a great place to dine
