Fowlers farm provided excellent food as usual, beautifully presented. We weren't hurried through our meal and we had no complaints.

More about The Fowlers Farm

Originally a quaint farmhouse, the The Fowlers Farm still values its pastoral heritage and delivers traditional British food, with oaken beams and a countryside situation. The 500-year-old building boasts a cosy hearth and an al fresco beer garden with eye-catching views of the surrounding country.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Fowlers Farm menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies designed by celebrity chef James Martin offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Fowlers Farm ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Fowlers Farm is only a 15-minute walk from Braintree Freeport Train Station, or a 5-minute drive into the town centre.

My wife and myself have been running pubs in London for 30+years and we know how the public can be hard work but the waiter who was working on Wednesday evening was a credit to your set up dealing with a couple on the next table who we're not the most happy eaters you would find? He was a credit and he is a member of staff that should be looked after they are a rare breed in this day and age

The meal was perfect; the staff were friendly, smiling and chatty; the food was excellent and the pre-Xmas atmosphere was wonderful - Top Marks!

The food was great and good value and the ambiance was really inviting with the log fire and the deco - but the big minus was how slow the service was. When I came here with my 88 year old mother in law in 2007 , we loved the level access and easy wheelchair access, and the warmth and the fact that we were not not rushed. But for a group of 3 x 40 + women out for a holiday lunch, it should not have taken from 12.45 to 3.45 to be served with 2 courses. It also took a while for the bill to get to us and even then there was zero interest in collecting our payment, so much so that we joked out loud about whether it was 'on the house' or whether we should have tea there as well and whether I would get to collect my cat from the vet's which shut that day at 8pm! In summary it's a lovely place but you need to do something about the service. I always tip but this time none of us did
