Putting an innovative slant on modern Welsh cuisine, the Armless Dragon aims to ensure that its food is locally sourced, seasonal and organic, wherever possible. The chefs combine these culinary elements to offer such delights as Smoked Monmouthshire Chicken with Avocado and Carmarthen Ham Crisps, Skate Wing with Cockle and Leek Sauce, or Sirloin of Welsh Black Beef with Mushrooms, Roast Tomatoes, Onions and Potato Gratin. The desserts on the menu are even more sumptuous, including Bara Brith Bread and Butter Pudding. The atmosphere is laid-back and allows you to simply enjoy your food. This truly Welsh Dragon also has an extensive wine list but, at an average of £25 a head, it won't burn a hole in your pocket.

Situated in the heart of the student community, Fortune House offers a relaxed and informal atmosphere in which to enjoy your meal. The dining area is suitable for both larger parties, as well as intimate dinners. The wine list is wide-ranging and can be browsed in the reception area, where you can kick off your evening with a drink before your meal. A firm favourite with much of the local Chinese community, they can vouch that you will find good food and plenty of it here, particularly with the 'all you can eat' option. However, if this menu looks a bit too daunting, why not try portions of Stuffed Lettuce Rolls, Chicken with Ginger and Spring Onion, or Szechuan Prawns. Offering three-course meals at decent prices, it looks like good fortune has come to Cardiff with Fortune House.

Once a traditional inn in Machen in Wales, this delightful restaurant retains the pub's original features with a contemporary twist, using contemporary art, oak panelling and halogen lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu is seasonal and uses fresh ingredients to create dishes such as chorizo sausage salad with caramelised pear and truffles, black pudding in filo with a tomato and chilli salsa, and beef with garlic king prawns on courgette ribbons. Garcon may just be the restaurant that put the snails in Wales. Well, perhaps not literally but you will certainly find escargots au beurre à l'ail on the menu, alongside a host of other traditional French dishes. There are two menus in operation here: the lighter bistro menu and the more extensive à la carte. The bistro menu is offered between 12 and 5pm, providing more 'lunchy' meals, such as petit moules frites and salade Nicoise. There is also an unthreatening children's menu for youngsters, all of which are cooked fresh to order. Dining at Garcon in the evening could see you choosing from pan-fried foie gras with chutney, steak tartare with fries, bread crumbed scallops and the royal seafood platter.
