Dominated by Nelson’s Column and the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square is London’s iconic centre. The historic Strand heads off from the Square towards the City, whilst neighbouring Charing Cross Station has been serving the south-east’s commuters since 1864. Theatreland, Covent Garden and the Embankment are all within a few minutes’ walk.
The area is scattered with top quality restaurants. On the Strand, you’ll find the Strand Carvery. With a simple and elegant interior, the Strand Carvery ... is hugely popular for its top quality roasts and fresh seafood. Wander down Northumberland Avenue towards the Thames, and there is the majestic Northall at Corinthia Hotel. The Northall offers modern opulence and a menu that celebrates the best in British cooking.
Amongst the restaurants in Charing Cross is the rather different Champagne Charlie’s, a Davy’s Wine Bar tucked away beneath the station. Bare brick walls, sawdust covered floors, and hearty British food are highlights, all under the careful eye of a family who opened their first London wine house in 1870. Moving back to fine dining, there is also a good choice of French restaurants. One of the best is Les Deux Salons in Covent Garden. Run by Michelin-starred duo Anthony Demetre and Will Smith, Les Deux Salons offers both a sophisticated brasserie menu and a rather chic afternoon tea within a magnificently ornate setting.
