We started our evening in the cocktail bar where we enjoyed well mixed cocktails and nibbles efficiently served by pleasant and friendly staff, who offered us some very tasty complimentary hors d’ouvres. We then made our way to the Garden Restaurant, a large imposing and elegant room with well spaced tables and soft piped piano music. There was a baby grand piano but no pianist, maybe because it was a Tuesday, or maybe it’s just there for show. Prompt and attentive food service, although we were left to pour our own wine from an ice bucket nearby as the wine waiter was nowhere to be seen once she had delivered our screw-topped bottle of Chablis at a shade under fifty quid. (Not the fault of the restaurant I know but disappointing nonetheless.) The wine that is, not the absence of pouring staff - that is the fault of the restaurant. The food was beautifully presented, especially the tuna nicoise which was a work of art (and delicious.) The other starters of prawn cocktail and goat’s cheese tart were declared top-notch too. The lobster Thermidor main course, a classic dish, did not disappoint either and was packed with tender juicy chunks of lobster in a tasty sauce. The desserts were a joy to behold. The hazelnut mousse with peanut brittle was light and fluffy, and the chocolate cake with honeycomb ice cream was also a triumph. The only real disappointment of the evening was the dry-aged sirloin steak, which was difficult to cut and quite tough tasting, even though it was cooked medium rare, as requested. My husband couldn’t eat it because it was just too chewy with quite a large streak of fat running through it, but the situation was dealt with efficiently by offering an alternative dish (which was declined because we had finished our lobsters by the time the matter was dealt with). It was subsequently struck from the bill which was fair and satisfactory. The coffee came with hot milk and delightful petit fours and rounded off our meal very nicely.

Excellent Sunday lunch and great service. Elegant dining room in fantastic location. Would love the return of the pianist at some time in the future.

Super service very efficient - food was extremely good and varied, one of our party is a vegtarian and there were plenty of options. Chose a local wine which was expensive £60+ for a bottle and a bit disappointing.

the experience was OK, but not for the first time I had to return to the hotel the next day because we had been charged for cocktails the we didn't have. It would be helpful if the bill was delivered to the table instead of having to settle at the door. This is unusual and is not conducive to checking before leaving.

Returning after many occasions. The service and food was superb. We still judge every other restaurant in the UK and abroad by the Garden Room Restaurant and really no other restaurant has come up to the standard maintained at The Grand. Lovely occasion as always. Well done!!.
