Set on the bank of the River Thames, against the picturesque backdrop of Wolvercote, The Trout is an historic building which traces its roots to the 17th century. Now offering al fresco dining and serving modern British cuisine, this cosy, country pub and the riverbank it sits on have provided inspiration for literary gems such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Trout restaurant menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.
The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Trout bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.
The Trout in Oxford is a 10-minute drive from Oxford Railway Station.

I felt bad for the staff as it was obviously extremely busy and there were issues with the drains, the toilets wouldn't flush properly and the sinks were overflowing and water was pouring from the ceiling of the restaurant. Other than that the experience was great! the staff were friendly, and the food was amazing, really enjoyed teh scallops and the nut roast and the chocolate bomb, a cosy and lovely pub that i love coming to.

Connor gave us excellent advice regarding the menu and particularly the wines and his suggestion was most enjoyable - on our next visit we would try to get Connor as our waiter. We found the whole situation very enjoyable. Would suggest waiter ask customers if they want ice and if so how much in their aperitif. We found that there was far too much ice in our drinks.

Friendly and efficient service in a lovely old building. Probably several cottages converted into interesting cosy rooms. Middle of the road menu but tasty . Beautiful outside setting although it was evening and raining!

Two menus were provided, a Christmas menu and a standard menu. We ate from both menus, the food from the standard menu being very good, but the food from the Christmas menu being dry as if been re-heated.
