A rustic retreat amidst the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Wensleydale Heifer Leyburn serves seasonal British food that has earned it a place in the Good Food Guide. Serving a dedicated lobster menu, and winner of AA Seafood Pub of the Year, the restaurant specialises in using carefully sourced British produce to create simple but exquisitely presented dishes.
Prepared by a team of chefs who have worked in several different countries, the weekly changing menu is diverse, and is led by supreme seafood from the British Isles. From the grill, try the signature malt whisky and brown sugar marinated beef fillet, celeriac and truffle purée, and a choice of sauces including aged Roquefort and muscat cream. The seafood dishes are every bit as exciting, and include banana leaf-baked Scottish salmon, with crab and Thai peanut curry sauce. The Heifer’s Canadian lobster salad is enough to satisfy the hungriest of diners, featuring lobster, scallops, tiger prawns, crispy belly pork, smoked bacon, and a sweet maple syrup dressing. As well as a vegetarian menu, a range of dishes have been designed for gluten-free diners, including the Heifer’s famous fish and chips.
As well as a children’s menu, vegetarian and vegan menu, and a hearty Sunday lunch, The Wensleydale Heifer West Witton boasts a lengthy list of world wines and creative cocktails. The snug and bar offer the opportunity to enjoy a hand-picked whisky or local ale from the comfort of a cosy fireside chair, whilst the restaurant garden is open for al fresco dining in warmer weather.
Surrounded by stunning scenery, The Wensleydale Heifer in North Yorkshire sits between the idyllic towns of Leyburn and Hawes.

All perfect! The reception we had was friendly and efficient, and we were shown to our table very quickly where we were offered pre-lunch drinks and provided with chilled water. As always, the food was exquisite, from the amuse bouche and starter, through a wonderful main course with a vast range of delicious vegetables, to the most gorgeous pudding!

This was our first visit. I travelled from Melton Mowbray (180 miles) and my partner travelled from Cockermouth (80 miles) I lost that one! Anyway, we arrived early, went for a walk and returned in time for our table at 1.45pm. When we first arrived there were seats available and we had a quiet five minutes. All was good. When we returned the lounge area proved to be far too small to comfortably accommodate all the guests. The first dinning table we were offered was in the corridor - so not idea. We were offered a second, much more acceptable table. The dinning room was incredibly busy with several large groups celebrating birthdays etc. The starter arrived. The Prawn Cocktail was listed as a 'classic '70s' dish. I recall this classic being served in a glass, with chopped lettuce, cucumber celery and toped with shelled prawns, a whole prawn wedge of lemon on the side of the glass and often sprinkled with paprika and offed with sliced brown bread and butter. The dish that was served was a cereal bowl with some lettuce and spooned over with prawns in a thick and rather bland sauce. Not at all presented in the 'classic' manner. The Goats chees croquets - was in fact one mass of goats cheese rolled and fried in crumbs. The whole tasting experience was limited in texture and contrast. Eating what felt like a mouthful of just goats chees was unpleasant. Several (maybe three) much smaller portions of the croquets would have been infinitely preferable and offered greater contrast of texture and been less overwhelming. Less is often more. The main course, we both had beef was an offering of mixed delights. The beef was excellent - compliments to the farmer and the butcher. The Yorkshires were also excellent. Then came the vegetables. The mashed potato was what can only be described as 'dolloped' into the serving tin. The roasted veg were well cooked and proved to be a pleasant mixture of colour and tastes. see below as run out of characters
