Right on the edge of the New Forest, Waterford Restaurant at Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel & Resort is a luxurious setting inside this 19th-century manor house. Serving traditional British flavours, diners are also treated to views out across the Solent Coast.

The meal itself was ok. We didn’t get any bread, which I would expect in a restaurant of that caliber. Also the choices of sides were pretty boring. Carrots, broccoli or chips. The meat was very well cooked as was all the bits that came with it and the staff were very attentive and friendly. Sunday’s breakfast was awful. I would compare to Travellodge. Monday was better as we could order from menu. Apparently when the hotel is busy that’s not an option and only a warmed buffet is available.

Meat eaters have a good selection to choose from. As a veggie the menu was very limited. For starter, options were uninteresting- I could have soup of the day or a selection of breads. The soup was sweet potato which was ok but very boring and came with a dry piece of bread and no butter. I opted for one of two choices on the main course menu. The rosti was totally soaked in oil and inedible, the poached egg was minute with no yolk and the sauce (which was bright green) tasted awful and had the flavour of very strong fire ash. We couldn't work out what it was supposed to be but it was thoroughly unpleasant. The spinach was nicely cooked. I made the waiter aware my meal wasn't good no he brought me an extra creme brûlée for dessert as I hadn't been able to eat much. Creme brûlée and mini shortbread biscuit was nice. My partner's meal, pigs cheek and apple starter was apparently tasty although extremely small. His main was steak and peppercorn sauce which he said was well cooked. We were one of only two tables of guests. The service from the one member of staff at front of house was good, he was doing the bar and waiting tables as it was so quiet. Unfortunately our evening was really let down by my inedible meal. The veggie options were poorly thought out (for example the only starter was sweet potato soup followed by one of two main course options pumpkin, butternut and sweet potato pasta or a dish of potato rosti. ) and it was poorly prepared. Disappointing as it was a big birthday celebration.
