An Upper Street favourite for almost 30 years now, Le Mercury is a charming neighbourhood restaurant with a classic French flavour. Sumptuous brasserie-style dishes are served in a relaxed space, filled with lush pot plants and soft candlelight in the evenings.
The Le Mercury menu is filled with gourmet French bistro favourites, complemented by a polished wine list. Start off with foie gras and ham hock ballotine with toasted bread and apple compote, or moules marinière cooked in white wine with a dash of cream. Well-priced mains include roast breast of Barbary duck with pommes purée and Grand Marnier sauce, while vegetarians can enjoy treats like the asparagus cheddar tart with balsamic reduction.
Vintages from across France and further afield are served at Le Mercury in Islington, with dessert wine and port to finish. Other after-dinner treats include glazed lemon tart, and a generous cheese platter.
An approachable slice of French dining in London, Le Mercury is a 10-minute walk from Highbury & Islington Tube Station.

Le Mercury is a great local french restaurant, amazingly good value and friendly staff. They offer deals all the time. It is always packed because of it's quality and value. Highly recommend this restaurant.

steak was very chewy, and cray frish starter tasted like it had come striaght out of freezer/fridge - very average all round

We were really quite disappointed with our experience. The food was great and good value for money. However, the dining experience was really bad. We were put upstairs to the top floor restaurant despite the downstairs being where all the people and atmosphere was. When we arrived , the lights were on and bright, it was really cold, the tables weren't fully set, there were no guests and there was no music - so the space was just silent. I didn't fancy eating there if it was going to be like that all evening so I asked the waiter if there would be other guests to fill the room and he assured me there would. Over the evening, two more small tables were seated but the space is meant to hold ~15 tables, so it was empty and quite awkward for the guests who could hear everything each other were saying. Importantly, I had to sit with my jacket and scarf on for the meal given they didn't put heating on upstairs - it was really cold all through the meal. It also meant the waiter wasn't there most of the time - he was downstairs where the majority of guests were... I had to wait 10 minutes to ask for basic things like extra bread with my starter. And at the end, it was just me and my boyfriend upstairs on our own waiting on the bill for 15 minutes. We both really weren't impressed, which was a shame given the food was good and the waiter was generally nice.

The service and food were great. It was the perfect pre-theatre destination. The vegan scallops & spinach linguine were delicious, we will definitely be back.

Disappointing! I have been to Le Mercury before, and always been happy but this time it was not so. I had the Seabass, the fish was very good but why came with it, quite mediocre. But the main complaint is about the duck my son had. It was hardly chewable! He is not one to make a fuss, I tried it and would have sent it back. y coffee at the end, came cold .... So not great all round!

Especially good if you're attending a show at the Almeida, just across the street.

Been going over 20yrs (I’m a local) We will not be going back! We didn’t realise that there had been a change of owners and menu changes! Change is always good to make things better! But unfortunately this new owner is making portions smaller and like most restaurants when they make it to the top , their standards go down to save money! My favourite restaurant no more! I’m not saying the flavour of the food is not good, but small portions and not quite the standard of the old Mercury !
