After looking forward to visiting Mallory Court for many years I was very happy to receive a voucher as a present for high tea. I’ve been very ill hence on a vegan/sugarless diet so you very kindly allowed me to bring a friend for lunch instead. The girl who welcomed us was very nice and we sat by a window overlooking the garden. Unfortunately the double glazing had broken down which spoiled our aspect. My friend ordered fish and chips which looked and tasted wonderful. I had chick pea burger which on the whole was very disappointing. The chick pea burger was good but the ‘go withs’ were sadly lacking. There was a cheap white burger bun split in two spread with liquidised avocado, burger on top of one half and three tiny lettuce leaves, one slice of tomato and a few slivers of red onion on the other and a basket of French fries. When the waitress asked if everything was ok I told her I wasn’t satisfied and asked for some more salad. This was duly brought to the table, which was a very nice bowl of rocket and baby mushrooms with a tasty dressing. Why oh why do vegans/vegetarians always get the terrible meal yet pay an equal amount? If I was serving this dish I would have split the bun/or, even better, cut two circles from a quality bread and toasted/griddled it, topped one with smashed avocado and some baby leaves and a curl of lemon and the other with fresh leaves and the burger, together with tomato/onion/garlic salsa on the side with the French fries. Very easy and far more appealing! Unfortunately, because of this I won’t be recommending your lovely hotel/Brasserie.

Although we have had afternoon team at Mallory Court we were in the Brassiere this time and we ate outside. The afternoon tea wasn't quite like I thought it would be - you usually present it on a 3 tied cake stand, however the sandwiches came on an ordinary plate, then we had sorbet - which I didn't expect and then we have scones & cakes that did come on a stand. The selection of sandwiches were poor to say the least and they were soggy - 1/2 a round of bread each that's all we had - making 3 little finger sandwiches - the scones were lovely and we did take the cakes home after signing a disclaimer. When I booked the afternoon tea on the web it kept on coming up with al la carte afternoon tea and that is not what I kept clicking on and on the bill it said afternoon lunch. Although it was a lovely day and the waiter was extremely helpful we were disappointed as we have been several times for afternoon tea and this has always been served on nice comfy sofas (our choice this time to eat outside) in the library (well the room had a lot of books in so I assumed that it was the library). So if and when we come again I will actually telephone first to ensure that we get the correct afternoon tea and also where we want to eat it. I didn't complain at the time as my husband and myself were having such a nice day but we both said when we got back in the car that we were very disappointed and it may be a while before we choose to come again and at the moment I wouldn't recommend the hotel for afternoon tea.

The food was excellent and worth waiting for (see below) Although the actual serving staff were friendly and helpful, the service was very slow. We sat down at the fable at 1300. The starters arrived at 1340 and the main course at 1420. We left about 1500. A well-paced service for this quality of food seems quite correct but these intervals were, we thought, excessive.

I had afternoon tea in the brasserie garden with 4 friends. The service, presentation, and food were are superb and we had a wonderful time. It was a truly special experience and the best afternoon tea I’ve had so far. My only criticism is that the fruit scones were quite hard and difficult to cut so we’re uneaten.
