The Clifton is a gastro-pub that does decent food. It is smartly fitted out and centrally located in Clifton. The menu is fairly standard for a pub, although there was also a burger menu when we visited.

What a disappointment! Good reviews made me book for an evening meal with our daughters, boyfriends and friends. The starters were fine. The wait for mains was interminable. So much so that we were proactively offered free drinks. One of the mains was seafood linguine. 3 people ordered. We were told only 2 portions left. When they turned up one of the portions was normal size the other extremely small. Obviously only really enough for one large portion. Other people who ordered same meals had different things on the plate. One potatoes completely missing another missing pesto. Ordered sweets. Again a ridiculously long wait. How hard is it to pull together 5 sweets? The sweets arrived. Promised sticky toffee with vanilla ice cream. Turned up with chocolate ice cream which one of the people sharing the desert doesn't like. Told waiter who said I don't know what to do about that! Brownies should be with hazelnut ice cream. Again turned up with chocolate. No explanation or apology just left on the table. 2 people had lemon tart. I don't know what had gone wrong with that but it was inedible. So much so that the people who ordered both spit their first mouthful into a tissue! It smelled odd too. Yes I got free drinks and didn't pay for puddings but it didn't make up for the fact that the meal was a disaster. Not least because we booked early to leave early to travel the 2.5 hours drive home. We ate at 7 and we're just about done by 930. What an awful and pretty expensive experience!

Sunday roast was incredible. Really cosy feel to the place, great for a cold rainy day, decorated really nicely with board games available to play. I couldn't fault the service - very friendly staff. Booking was easy. Overall a great lunch!
