Présentation du restaurant

A true taste of rustic dining from the south of Italy, Apulia is a charming, rustic trattoria that's just moments from Smithfield Market. Specialising in Puglian cuisine, this is an intimate little spot with quirky design touches like vintage bicycles on the wall and weathered white wooden furniture.

Classic Puglian family recipes made with authentic ingredients using traditional methods are the focus on the Apulia menu, starting off with rustic appetisers like marinated beef tartare with fennel and sun-dried tomatoes, and oven-baked caciocavallo cheese with braised apple, raisins and honey. Freshly made pasta delicacies feature options like slow-cooked duck ragu, and spaghetti with sea urchin pulp, fresh tomatoes and coffee powder. Perfectly fired pizzas are made with a carefully guarded dough recipe, and topped with imported meats and other Italian treats.

All desserts at Apulia in Barbican are homemade, and include baked dough ball filled with custard cream and sour cherry, and the gluten-free almond and chocolate cake. The wine list offers up celebrated Italian vintages, and there are a selection of irresistible homemade breads served also.

A truly authentic trattoria in London, Apulia is seconds from historic attractions like the William Wallace Memorial, and only a 3-minute walk from Barbican Tube Station.

We arrived early for dinner pre concert at the Barbican round the corner. Charming restaurant with superb real Italian food. Wine we chose was unavailable but the recommended alternative was excellent (and cheaper). Staff were attentive and delightful. Menu was so different to standard Italian.... very varied with unusual dishes. Go there and enjoy.

Always busy. Good menu. Calamari were excellent. Duck ragu tasted great but lacked a little in presentation. Good house wines.

The service and the food was delicious. We had two off of the £15 set menu, and then two off the main. They also went off menu to create a vegan dish for our vegan friend. With one vegetarian, one celiac, and one vegan, they were so accommodating. The wine menu also looked fabulous. The décor was a bit shabby, but very 'rustic' Italian.

As always the food was absolutely delicious same as the service. Everyone was friendly and efficient. One of our friend did like his dish so the waiter immediately changed it. Thank you so much for that. We love this place and always come back for more succulent Italian food.

Friendly service, food was good value for money, particularly the home made desserts. My one criticism is that the mark-up on the wine list was on the high side-very little at under £40

We always try and get the table just inside the front door which is quieter than the rest of the restaurant. Best food was the Fish cassoulet and the tagliata.

We had the set menu which was good value. Reasonable good quality food. I personally enjoyed the meatballs although the focaccia to start was more like a mini pizza

Very expensive for what it was. We asked for sparkling water and were given a bottle costing £4. Once we got the menu we saw we could have unlimited "house" sparkling water for £1 each. The nibbles were too pricey for what they were - £3.50 for a small bowl of bread - ditto olives. My daughter had the pasta dish which was so expensive and rather bland. The pizza was OK, but not worth it. The waitress was grumpy. They left the front door open - we had to ask for it to be shut. It was about 8 degrees outside. And finally - they added a 12.5 % "discretionary" tip onto the bill. When I said I was not prepared to pay 12.5%, the waitress said she had to speak to the manager about that. I always leave a tip - even for poor service because I don't want to penalise the waiting staff for a bad restaurant. This is why I stopped going to Giraffe - since folded.
