    Food very average, like poor pub food, however, service was very good.

    A choice of 3/4 menu choice du jour available (no a la carte) but pleasant enough. The starters were generous, especially the chicken liver parfait, but the brioche it was served with should have been toasted which suggests a lack of experience in the kitchen. The surf and turf burger main was well intentioned, and the integration of the bacon with the high quality beef worked really well in terms of flavour but the burger was over-cooked and consequently on the dry side. My venison main was excellent as was my daughter's pan-fried trout fillet with lovely confit potatoes and good asparagus. My venison was served with vegetables including spinach (the veg cook really knows their stuff) along with a passion fruit jus which would have worked fine if the passion fruit seeds had been removed. Passion fruit seeds are bitter in taste and detract from the experience; this is not the first time I've come across this problem in mid-range/high end restaurants. The desserts were OK in the case of the pavlova which looked very pretty, however my thyme infused peaches didn't have any hint of thyme associated with them so were basically peaches and ice-cream. The third dessert option was ice-cream which is lazy as no-one is making even the pretence of providing an interesting third option. In summary, mostly well executed and at £25 a head decent value for money for an evening meal. Our waiter was particularly attentive and helpful. We had a good table with sufficient light but some of the other tables would have had you reaching for your glasses in order to see your plate. I would eat here again.

    First time visiting this restaurant for afternoon tea using the ‘dine out’ scheme. We were very impressed with the service and sweet & savoury selection offered for tea. Hand sanitiser was available at the entrance to the hotel and restaurant. Staff were wearing masks. In dining social distancing measures were in place too. So felt the necessary precautions were being implemented and taken seriously by the management. Overall excellent afternoon out!

    Service was good although the menu was so limited. There was no turf to go with the surf. No steak, only three choices - chicken dish, fish dish, veg pasta that was it. This was not highlighted at the time of booking, not until sat at the table did we find out. Too late to leave and get into elsewhere to eat.

    Food was delicious, bit disappointed there was not the option to have actual surf and turf. Wine list started at £35 a bottle, so did not bother with wine

    My wife and I shared the cote du boeuf and it was exquisite, up there with Edinburgh's best steak restaurants and at a lower price. The front of house team, led by Peter, are very welcoming and professional. I would recommend dining here to anyone, not just hotel guests.
