The quirky Mr P’s Curious Tavern offers a wide range of European specialities in a relaxed, informal and interesting setting. The location is an atmospheric (allegedly haunted) Grade II listed building, parts of which date back to the same era as The Shambles. Andrew Pern, AKA Mr P, Executive Chef/Director, is also the Chef/Owner of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome.

There’s something for everyone on Mr P’s menu which encourages you to pick and mix from a selection of sharing platters including Spanish, and charcuterie and cheese. Small plates of gin and beetroot cured salmon or king scallops and pork belly are other options. Mains include dishes like corn-fed chicken breast, ravioli of smoked potato and egg yolk or pan-fired halibut.

For pudding there’s tempting affogato or rhubarb posset. Liquid refreshment at Mr P’s restaurant offers small, medium and large vessels of wine, craft ales, spirits and other beverages.

On Thursday evenings, Mr P’s acts as a showcase for local troubadours, adding live music to the mix. Located in the heart of the city, Mr P’s Curious Tavern is a 13-minute walk from York Rail Station.

Good location, nice decor, great service. Was very quiet when we went (Friday lunch) which was a bit of a shame as the atmosphere would have been better. Good value

Lovely nibbles, really enjoyed the celery sticks and pork scratchings. Steak was perfect, wine excellent. Small table angled into staircase, not the best but ok. Good atmosphere and service

Three of us had lunch on Sunday, two roasts and the fish cake. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The salmon fish cake was excellent, “just right for a light meal”. The roast beef was well done, my preference is for rare, but it wasn’t offered. We found the glazed vegetables on the sweet side, but enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding. It’s a good menu and wine list, my glass of Valpolicella was very pleasant, and the table water had ice and lemon.

The first dip of mushroom soup put a smile on my face. Although it was so strong was slightly painful on my throat. Every course had an element that crept that smile there.

The place itself was nice and waiting staff friendly but unfortunately our meals were extremely salty. We were disappointed as we’d looked at lots of different places to eat and thought this would suit us best.

I love this place, the food is always delicious and interesting and the decor is perfect for a sort of upscale tavern experience.

Really nice restaurant quite quirky full of curios, we went to the rear of the premises, very good drinks menu, Food menu was small but the food was excellent, I had a Yorkshire Pudding for starter my wife had a rarebit both excellent followed by a double beefburger, I pride myself on having a good appetite but I could not finish it two half pound burgers with cheese on each in a brioche bun with a large portion of chips on the side, my wife had the fish cake which was served in a lobster "gravy" she said it was delicious main meal prices from about £14 - £28ish, couldn't manage dessert, we will definitely be going back.
