Présentation du restaurant

The quirky Mr P’s Curious Tavern offers a wide range of European specialities in a relaxed, informal and interesting setting. The location is an atmospheric (allegedly haunted) Grade II listed building, parts of which date back to the same era as The Shambles. Andrew Pern, AKA Mr P, Executive Chef/Director, is also the Chef/Owner of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome.

There’s something for everyone on Mr P’s menu which encourages you to pick and mix from a selection of sharing platters including Spanish, and charcuterie and cheese. Small plates of gin and beetroot cured salmon or king scallops and pork belly are other options. Mains include dishes like corn-fed chicken breast, ravioli of smoked potato and egg yolk or pan-fired halibut.

For pudding there’s tempting affogato or rhubarb posset. Liquid refreshment at Mr P’s restaurant offers small, medium and large vessels of wine, craft ales, spirits and other beverages.

On Thursday evenings, Mr P’s acts as a showcase for local troubadours, adding live music to the mix. Located in the heart of the city, Mr P’s Curious Tavern is a 13-minute walk from York Rail Station.

We ate here on Saturday night. I had been before about eighteen months ago but it was the first time for my husband. The menu has dramatically changed since I was last there, before it was small plates and in a tapas style but this time it was half a dozen starters and mains to choose from or a taster menu.. We were sat down at our table and given the menus. But It was quite some time before we were asked what we’d like to order and wasn’t asked if we’d like a drink when we were seated. Slightly disappointed about this but the food once ordered was nice and came promptly. The waitress was friendly and helpful when we asked questions. Unfortunately where we were seated was directly in the line of the door and every time the door was opened we got really cold from it being left open. Not much that could be done about this but it spoilt things for us a little. Also the floor/carpet on the stairs up to the toilets was covered in dropped food and was really filthy. The kitchen is upstairs and we were seated downstairs so the stairs are used constantly to take the food to the restaurant. The toilets weren’t very clean either. The food we had was good and we on the whole had a nice evening but there were a lot of things as listed above that will sadly mean we probably won’t return.

Quirky place, arrived but table wasn’t ready - had to be cleaned. Got seated and ordered quickly. Waited 50 minutes and complained - food quickly came but was quite cold - think it had be waiting for service. Food was good but 50 minutes for cheese on toast was excessive. We did get 10% knocked off but I wouldn’t hurry back.

We had the tasting menu along with the wine package that linked the wines to the courses. Soup was exquisite and loved the bread with onion spread. Scallops lovely especially as it came without the coral. Pea dish, interesting but maybe could even be a smaller quantity. Main course was an interesting combination of flavours and the wine went really well with the dish. The Yorkie bar wasn’t sickly which is what I expected but was well balanced and fun to eat. The cheese and ‘cake’ provided a great finish to a great meal. The maitre’d was exceptional giving a clear and interesting description for each wine for each course (this was despite the place being really busy so I’ve no idea how she managed to give us so much time). Waitress service was also faultless. Loved all the wines and the meal was terrific

Visited with friends for one of their birthdays. Had really great experience and the waiter couldn't do enough for us. Opted for the sharing platters 1 meat and 1 veg and then a few starters and it was all very tasty (even the black olives for someone who doesn't like olives) and we all felt the portion size was right. the bill was about what you would expect to pay and we all said we would return again.

We’d booked a table for 4 people online for early Tuesday evening, but hadn’t previously visited Mr P’s. We all enjoyed our meal and drinks as well as the live piano music.

Decor was good. The pianist was excellent. The food was enjoyable. The service was dire. From the moment we walked in the door to when we left. What should have been an enjoyable evening turned out to be a lesson in endurance and tolerance. The waitress who greeted us at the door intimated we didn’t have a reservation. We kept repeating our name and table time and she read a few other names out looking at us expectantly and then as I was about to show her the email she found our name, as if it was our fault she hadn’t looked in the right place. Then the disasters started rolling in thick and fast. Starters came before our pre-dinner G&Ts. When I said I preferred drinks before food she said “they’re on the bar”. So we ate and drank together. We ordered 2nd G&Ts and were given a wine list for our main. They came at the same time as the main before we’d even ordered our wine! And they got our order wrong, swapping the steaks. I have never felt so rushed. I would have had a more leisurely evening at McDonald’s. Good job the Pianist played an eclectic and soothing selection of tunes.
