Awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2019 Guide, Route serves colourful seasonal dishes in the city centre. An interior of rustic white walls, pot plants and soft lighting make this a relaxing spot to sample the bi-weekly updating menus, with al fresco seating out the front to enjoy any passing sunshine.
Diners are offered only the freshest seasonal flavours on the Route menu, complemented by a diverse wine list. Small plate dishes are a speciality, starting off with fresh seafood like Lindisfarne oysters, and a selection of cow and goat cheeses. Enjoy modern takes on home-style favourites, like the smoked paprika, chorizo and chickpea stew, or tuck into hearty favourites like the 40-day aged steak au poivre.
A selection of bold, expertly crafted sides are served at Route in Newcastle, like the rustic black treacle bread, and pink fir apple potatoes. Sunday lunches offer slow-cooked meats from across the UK, with a wine list featuring vintages from England and around the world.

All the dishes we ordered were lovely and each very distinctive! It was expensive for small plates however completely worth it due to the quality

Warm welcome. Good choice of dishes to suit everyone. Cooking was excellent, good flavours and combinations. Imaginative wine list with plenty available by the glass. Definitely be heading back.

Fantastic. The only way to sum up Saturday night's visit. Stand-out dishes? All of them, we had a mix of oysters, small plates, large plates, a blackboard special and a dessert and shared. If I had to choose one dish as the best, which would be difficult as they were all perfect, it would be the Halibut off the specials board. Simply epic. Perfect piece of fish cooked literally to perfection by John Calton himself. What a chef. Great food, great service, great atmosphere and IMO priced just right. Worth every penny. Will be back soon.

Exquisite food, relaxed (in a good way) service in a tiny, no-fuss, candle-lit space. A little piece of Shoreditch in Newcastle.

This restaurant is well worth its Bib. Friendly, helpful staff. Warm atmosphere. Splendid food from locally sourced produce. Lindisfarne oysters were delicious, as was the bread. Very difficult to choose which of the tempting dishes from, the admirably short, menu to have. Cod and smoked mussels was delicious (although it could have done with a little more lettuce). A good spread of wines, with plenty by the glass. A cracking restaurant.
